A Map is Just a Map…It is Not the Territory

I was attending a fire ceremony a few weeks ago and the topic was Generational Curses. It was a fantastic lesson/ceremony and it really got me thinking. As usually happens, it increased my awareness of the lessons I learned growing up. I also heard it echoed in the conversations I was having with people as well as the topics I was reading.

In a fire ceremony, we are striving to let go of who we know ourselves to be and who we’ve known ourselves to be. Of course, we start with anything extremely toxic and work our way to even those things that we love about ourselves. That way when we wake up each day, we can ask ourselves who will I be today? And we are free to create a life that is truly meant for us.

A generational curse is something that is handed down from mother to daughter or father to son, as well as that which is handed down from previous generations. It can be anything from the extremely toxic, abuse or neglect to the well-meaning advice that a parent gives to their child to keep them safe. I am sure you can think of some of the things your parents or grandparents or aunts and uncles have said to you. How many of them have you made into patterns and ways of life?

In life, your parents “hand you a map,” a guide to tell you how to do things, how to handle situations, how to live. But the map is not the territory. It is simply a map and it is based on the information the person making it had at the time or maybe the map that was handed to them. However, if you have your head buried in a map, how can you possibly see the actual territory? There is a whole world out there that changes all the time. Let go of that map and check out what is really going on. So many possibilities exist and you can go explore them for yourself and create the life you want.
